I’m gonna show you how to make these plain white vans turn into…
These cool sharpie vans design… with just a marker! And don’t worry, you don’t have to be artistic to create these, it’s simple.
All you need is a little patience.

I’ve had quite a few people ask me where I bought these shoes.
I even had someone who worked at Vans be like… “damn I didn’t even know we offered those.”
And I was like… “nah bro I just bought white vans and made them with a marker.”
That’s not to brag, I say that because you can easily do this too, it just takes some patience. Well and a marker… and a pair of vans, but you get the point.
I can’t take credit for this idea, in fact I saw someone on the vans subreddit post a photo of theirs, so that’s where I got the inspiration. I ended up doing a little more research and found the artist’s Instagram and I believe he still does commissioned work.
So if you don’t wanna spend the time customizing them, I’d suggest hitting him up.
What You Need
Before you can do this, you obviously need some things. But you don’t need a lot, which is nice.
All you need is a white pair of vans (or any light color that you prefer) and a sharpie marker. I ended up buying this fabric marker from Amazon, but you can also use a sharpie. I’d suggest trying to use something with a fine tip.
Alright, the first step is to brainstorm ideas.
1. Brainstorm Ideas
Think of your hobbies, places you’ve been, and overall just things you’re interested in.
Once you have some ideas, it’s time to utilize Google. Personally, I love to surf, so I Googled surfing icons and a bunch of cool ideas popped up.
Screenshot some of your favorite ones, so when you’re stuck you can reference them for some inspiration.
Hand In Shoe
The biggest challenge when writing on your shoes is the center part. Since there’s no structure holding it up, then the best solution I found is to put your hand inside to make it firm.
Otherwise, when you go to write on it, it slumps down, making it nearly impossible to draw effectively.
Now it’s time to go for it.
Sketch With Pencil
If you’re a little nervous about using your marker right away, then I found it helpful to lightly sketch some ideas with a pencil. This way if you mess up, it’s not permanent.
Once you’re a little more comfortable with writing on your shoes, I’d suggest just freehanding it with your marker, because it’s gonna take a lot longer if you sketch with a pencil then go over it with your marker.
I originally thought that’s how I was gonna do it and I was yeah nah this is taking wayyyy tooo long.
Alright, I finally finished them, it took a few hours but I think it’s worth it, I mean check these out.
After about two hours of consistently drawing, I finally finished. Here are some closeup photos that you can use as a reference.
I hope you found this useful and if you end up doing this, tag @shrdshack on Instagram would love to see the final result!
